What Is Stump Grinding?
Stump grinding uses a machine fitted with a rotating cutting wheel to grind a stump — and its major surface roots — down below ground level, typically several inches deep. The result is a bed of wood chips where the stump used to be, rather than a hole in the ground.
Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal
Full stump removal (digging out the entire root ball) is invasive, leaves a large hole to fill, and can disturb nearby landscaping or utilities. Grinding is faster, less disruptive, and is the standard approach for most residential and commercial properties.
What Happens to the Wood Chips
The grinding process leaves a pile of wood chips and ground material in place of the stump. This can be removed, or left and worked into the soil or used as mulch, depending on your preference.
Can You Grind an Old Stump?
Yes — stump grinding works whether a tree came down last week or years ago. Older stumps are often easier to grind since the wood has had time to soften.
Reclaiming Your Yard
