Signs a Tree May Be Dangerous
Not every tree that looks fine actually is. Here are the warning signs that a tree may be structurally compromised.
Most trees that fail don't do so without warning — the signs are often visible if you know what to look for. Here are the most common indicators that a tree may be more likely to drop limbs or fail entirely.
- A visible lean that's new or has gotten worse over time
- A split, cracked, or included bark seam in the trunk
- Large amounts of dead wood throughout the canopy
- Fungus, mushrooms, or soft, decayed wood at the base or trunk
- Roots that have lifted, been damaged, or are visibly decayed
- Missing bark or cavities in the trunk or major limbs
Any one of these on its own doesn't necessarily mean a tree needs to come down — some can be managed with trimming, cabling, or ongoing monitoring. But if you notice more than one, or you're not sure how serious it is, it's worth having it looked at.
A free estimate includes an assessment of the tree's condition, so you'll know whether removal, trimming, or simply keeping an eye on it is the right call.
